Non-Government Screeners a Marginal Improvement

by George Donnelly on November 23, 2010

Mythbusters host Adam Savage got groped but the TSA apparently missed some large razor blades. Insane.

Reader Matthew writes:

Investigators successfully smuggled 75% of the fake bombs through TSA staffed checkpoints at LAX, and 60% through O’Hare according to a report obtained by USA Today. In tests at San Francisco International, where a private company conducts inspections, 20% of the contraband made it through security. TSA agents who fail such tests get retrained, El Al agents who fail such tests are summarily dismissed.

Private security agents would probably be a marginal improvement but we really need to get the TSA out of this business altogether. They are incompetent by design.

The first real mention I’ve seen of private security contractors in a MSM news article:

“Roser has filed complaints with Covenant Aviation Security, the private security contractor at San Francisco International Airport (SFO); the TSA, under whose auspices they work; and the ACLU. Despite promises on the CAS website that all complaints will be addressed within one business day, Roser has received no response.”

Well, I say we should not compromise. TSA or private, the practices are still inapporpriate, so I would not focus on being “anti-TSA” as much as opposing the policies altogether. Otherwise, we send the wrong message. Just MHO.

Chani, Your comment is right on. The stripsearches and porn scans are inappropriate and a violation of our 4th amendment rights no matter who conducts them.

The private contractors are simply operating under the direction of TSA.
