In the story “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” two weavers convince a king, and even a people, that the king is wearing a spectacular set of clothes. The weavers play on the king’s vanity, his pride and the people’s fear of speaking out against very public lies. A child, too pure and naive to understand the nature of big lies, speaks up. The king has no clothes on!

Right now, the government tells us this new security theater is keeping us safe. (It doesn’t, and might makes us even less safe.) The scanners protect us from underwear bombers. (They don’t.) The invasive patdowns are necessary. (They aren’t.) A group of weavers, lead by names like Chertoff, Big Sis and Pistole, is playing us. They’re confident that no clear-eyed child will step up and be taken seriously if he says, “But, that’s not real security!”

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., appearing on CBS, said Congress would hold hearings on the “very controversial” issue of how to strike the right balance. Asked how he would feel about submitting to a pat-down, Hoyer said, “I don’t think any of us feel that the discomfort and the delay is something that we like, but most people understand that we’ve got to keep airplanes safe.”

This is the emperor’s new security. His lie-weavers want you to think that what they are doing is keeping us safe and that it is the only way to do so. It is not. Stand up and tell the gullible emperor that he has no security. We won’t stand for his virtual strip searches and invasive gropings just to satisfy his ego. We need real security that doesn’t trample our basic human rights and dignity.

Also keep in mind that the emperor has a huge piece of the blame in this.

The terrorists were evil for their response, but they were trying to get revenge because the emperor was and is doing evil things.

The emperor decided to place his troops in a different country, before the war and before 9/11, which is evil. If the emperor decided to keep his troops at home during non-war times the terrorists wouldn’t have desired revenge.
